Instead of building off a drum beat, the core of the song is a jumbled piano loop that sounds discordant and uncomfortable until it’s surrounded by a steadily growing army of percussion and the happiest guitar riff Murphy’s ever allowed. By the end, the piano has become euphoric and confident without changing a lick, a neat thematic trick to accompany Murphy’s bittersweet lyrical acceptance of growing old. “All My Friends” survives the high-wire act of growing mature without getting boring, which just might be the lesson Prof. Murphy can teach his peers in the next decade.
