My friends have this incredible band called Cicada Radio. They just finished a music video in time for the December 1st release of their new album “No Fate But What We Make” out December 1st 2012 on Killing Horse Records.

Hurricane Sandy Relief Charities

Aside from the big names, I’ve started gathering some charities that have either already been around or ones that friends have started. For those who are unable to donate money… please donate your time. Volunteer to help clean, make meals, donate clothing, etc. Any help is still help in some way and greatly appreciated.

As you sit in your warm home tonight, think about those who are still without heat, hot water, power, food, clean water, and how it will be dropping into the 30s tonight.

If anyone knows of any more charities please feel free to reblog and add! Also please be careful donating to random charities… there is news of scams happening! Via ABC.com here are some tips to  research your charity before donating!

uNitY via The 7 Line: 100% of the proceeds going towards local charities

The Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund: For residents of the devastated Staten Island. The fund was founded in honor of Firefighter Carl V. Bini, a member of the FDNY tragically taken during 9/11.

Staten Island Meals on Wheels: Started by a friend of mine

Restore The Shore: Proceeds from t-shirts and hoodies going to The Red Cross and the apparel was designed & will be printed by local businesses at the Jersey Shore

Restore The Shore: Born & raised Jersey Shore local Allyson McGovern designed these shirts and 100% of the proceeds are going to the The New Jersey Division of The Salvation Army to help relief efforts

Bayside: Well-known NYC/NJ band is donating 100% of the proceeds from their “I Bird NYC” shirt to The Red Cross

10th Ave Burrito: Popular Belmar spot is accepting donations and 100% is going back to the Belmar and shore community for relief efforts. Brian has done incredible things in the shore community. Donations may be mailed to 10th Ave Burrito 801 Belmar Plaza Belmar, NJ 07719

Rotary Club of Hoboken: In partnership with The City of Hoboken, Party with Purpose, along with many other local organizations and charities, they have established the Rebuild Hoboken Relief Fund.

The boardwalk was where all of NJ came together; Where NJ for better or worse, met itself.

Picture #31 is right outside our front door. We watched that mattress float in front of our building for hours. I told Billy we could reenact Titanic on it. Also, the car the man is checking… it was almost completely submerged and the alarm went off for almost 36 hours and I wanted to wade out into the water and smash it. It didn’t want to stop! All the others finally stopped but this one just didn’t want to die uggghh

Consider us submerged. Luke just ran out to move his car. Ours is uptown more. So worried about it right now. Water is about to come through the front door. I need a drink.

Hoboken History

I’ve been living in Hoboken for about 18 months now and I’ve learned a whole lot of history in this adorable 1 square mile:

  • Home of Frank Sinatra, Dorothy Gibson, Dorothea Lange, and Joe Pantoliano
  • Where the first recorded baseball game took place in 1846
  • Rated #1 by Forbes as America’s Top Public Transportation City
  • Sybil’s Cave was used in an Edgar Allan Poe story and its legends have inspired stories for more than 100 years
  • Birthplace of the Oreo cookie
  • Where Maxwell House and Lipton Tea blossomed
  • Steven’s is one of the oldest technological universities in the United States
  • The Hoboken Fire Department has been a Class 1 rated fire department since 1996 and is the only one of its kind in New Jersey and one of only 24 in the United States. The firehouses and the fire museum, are on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Most bars per square mile in America
  • Birthplace of the ice cream cone (only 4 doors away from our apartment!)
  • Home of the “teamster sandwich” from 30 Rock and some of the best hand-pulled mozzarella in the country
  • The first brewery in America was in Hoboken on Castle Point in 1663
  • Thomas Edison drove the first electric train in 1930 on the Lackawanna Railroad from Hoboken to Montclair, NJ
  • It’s where the zipper was invented
  • Two of the 10 Russian spies found in 2010 used to live in Hoboken
  • The 1954 Marlon Brando film, On the Waterfront, was filmed in Hoboken. The film was based on true stories, written by the reporter Malcolm Johnson, about murders and extortion on the New York waterfront. It won eight Academy Awards
  • It has his own food tours called “Mangia Hoboken!”
  • It hosts an annual Flip Cup tournament
